The early season for the VFW baseball team started out like what happened to the Saints spring teams with two weather cancellations.
Last Wednesday night VFW Post 1914 played its first game on the road and lost to Blue Earth at Winnebago by a 3 to 1 score.
Dylan Wolle started and pitched well. He went six innings and allowed just four hits, three runs, with just one of them earned.
Tyler Witcraft had two hits including a double and the VFW’s only run.
David Bradley, Christopher Jones, and Brady Halvorson each had one hit.
VFW had four runners thrown out. Blue Earth scored two in the first and one in the fifth. St. James scored their lone run in the fourth.
Saturday, VFW started the home part of their season with a double header sweep over St. Clair.
The first game went VFW’s way with the score being St James 12 - St Clair 3.
David Bradley pitched a complete game allowing three hits and one earned run, while having ten strikeouts. Offensively Christopher Jones was three for three and Brady Halvorson was three for four. Tyler Witcraft, David Bradley and Derek Meyer had two hits each.
VFW pounded St. Clair for 17 hits. Post 1914 broke the game open in the fifth inning tallying six runs
St. James won the second game by a wide margin when they put 16 runs on the scoreboard to St. Clair’s two.
Post 1914 scored six runs in the first inning. Tyler Witcraft picked up the win by pitching four innings and allowing three hits and two runs and striking out eight. Branson Peterson pitched one hitless inning.
Branson was three for three at the plate. Witcraft had two hits with three RBIs. St. Clair pitchers had a hard time finding the plate because they walked 13 St. James batters in the second game.
