Zack Gleiter scored the American Legion’s winning and only run, on a suicide squeeze bunt laid down by Sam Carlson in a 1-zip victory over Worthington.
If Carlson had missed the bunt Gleiter would have had a ‘close encounter’ with the Worthington catcher. But Sam got the bunt down and Zack scored.
It was a small bit of revenge for St. James as both teams are mostly made up of the two high school teams that played less than two weeks ago.
The SJA Saints lost to Worthington in the opening game of the state playoffs when the Trojans scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth, blanked the Saints in the bottom half of the inning, and came away with a 4-3 win. All of the Worthington runs were unearned in that game.
The Worthington Legion team was a late addition to the St. James schedule as St. Clair was scheduled the play Post 33 in a double header.
Unfortunately, St. Clair was unable to field a team this summer, so Worthington graciously agreed to come up to St. James for a nine inning game.
Walker Froehling started for St. James went six innings and got the win. Jacob Ziemer relieved Walker in the seventh and pitched three more innings of shut out baseball.
Both teams had multiple scoring opportunities over many several innings. Except for the suicide squeeze every other runner died on the base paths.
Worthington’s greatest scoring threat was in the fifth when they loaded the bases with one out. A fly ball out to Devin Wolle in right field ended the threat and the inning.
Wolle and left fielder Tyler Witcraft made several important defensive plays in the outfield over the course of the game. Witcraft snagged a fly ball deep in left filed to end one Worthington scoring threat.
St. James’ defense played a solid game. The pitchers were efficient, but not overpowering, so the defensive had to make the plays to keep Worthington off the board.
The Legion collected four hits. Ryan Menssen went two for four. Zack Gleiter was one for two plate appearances. He also had two walks and scored the team’s only run. Can’t ask much more from a leadoff man.
The Legion game against USC on Monday was canceled due to the weather. St. James is scheduled to play Lake Crystal in a double header at home on Thursday. The first game gets under way at 6 pm at the St. James High School Varsity Field.
