St James Public Schools was awarded a partnership with AmeriCorps to hire both a full-time Math and Reading tutor for the 2013-2014 academic year.
These two individuals will work through the auspices of AmeriCorps, a national program that engages adults of all ages in a year-long commitment to volunteer service to address the needs of local communities.
Minnesota Math Corps is a statewide initiative to help every Minnesota student become proficient in algebra in eight grade. AmeriCorps members provide targeted tutoring interventions from 4th through 8th grade students who are partially proficient in math. Minnesota Reading Corps is also a statewide program; however, it targets literacy in primary students.
By becoming a tutor you are joining a service program, not entering into permanent employment. In exchange for your service, you receive a biweekly living allowance (every two weeks) of approximately $500 for full-time members.
After successful completion of the year, tutors receive a $5,500 education award for college use or to pay student loans. If the tutor is over 55 years of age, the award can be transferred to child or grandchild but must be used within seven years of the award.
To be eligible for either the Math or Reading Corps positions, applicants must be 18 years of age by August 1, must be either a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident, and must be able to pass a basic reading or math skills test.
If accepted into the program, tutors will be required to attend trainings. The initial training, called Member Institute, takes place in early August and covers math and reading instruction techniques and the curriculum. Additional required and optional trainings throughout the year cover topics such as tutoring refreshers, civic engagement and other topics to enhance your own professional development.
More information about both programs can be found at www.minnesotamathcorps.org or www.minnesotareadingcorps.org. Information about the local positions in St. James can be obtained at Northside Elementary by contacting Karla Beck, Principal at 375-3325. Deadline for applying for the tutor positions is the end of June.
