Independence Day is a celebration of America, friends, family and veterans.
Though it is a time for celebration, often with outdoor barbecues, fireworks and large family gatherings, it is also a time to remember those who fought for the freedom of the citizens of America.
Those few men and women protect the rights and freedoms of the many.
Remember to thank your veterans or those currently serving in America's Armed Forces this Fourth of July, then go enjoy this year's Independence Day activities.
Here are the top five things to do in St. James this Independence Day:
    5) Create your own fireworks display at your home! Only purchased in Minnesota from an authorized distributor are permitted on private property. Fireworks may not be shot on public property or in the St. James campground.
    4) Take a dip in the St. James pool and enjoy some time out of the sun. Nothing beats catching some rays or splashing in the pool on your day off. Enjoy the St. James swimming pool this Thursday and cool off in style.
    3) Enjoy a barbecue with friends and family. Pick up hot dogs, brats and hamburger from Paul's Food Pride, Super Fair Foods or Johnson's Meat Market. Remember that alcohol is not permitted in city parks, and if you do choose to drink during your celebration have plans to ride with sober driver. Police will be out in full force this Fourth of July weekend.
    2) Catch a concert in the park featuring Gerry Buse. The event will be held starting at 4 p.m. July 4, in the Memorial Park Band Shelter. The cost is free for anyone interested in hearing some live music here in St. James.
    1) Enjoy a fireworks display over Lake St. James. The fireworks are provided by the VFW and VFW Ladies Auxiliary in St. James and should last well into the night this year as they explode over the lake. A large variety of fireworks will be displayed including large exploding displays, sparkling lights, streaming rockets and explosions that provide a real POP! The fun begins at dusk in Memorial Park.
