  • School Board wraps up year end business

  • The St. James School Board met last Thursday to take care of some year end business and to approve contracts for some District employees. The current 2012-2013 fiscal year ends June 30, and the 2013-2014 fiscal year begins on July 1.

  • The St. James School Board met last Thursday to take care of some year end business and to approve contracts for some District employees. The current 2012-2013 fiscal year ends June 30, and the 2013-2014 fiscal year begins on July 1.
    A few employees had their current contracts finalized and contracts approved for the 13-14 year.
    Some employees had contracts approved for the next two years. All of these employees will receive a three percent raise next year and those with contracts for the following year will receive an additional three percent raise for that year.
    Contracts were approved for the two school principals. The Northside and High School principals did not receive pay raises, but the Board did approve a bonus plan where either principal could receive bonuses if students in grades that are taking state tests improve their test scores by designated amounts. If the grades do not improve the bonuses will not be paid.
    Northside Asst. Principal Mike Fugazzi did receive a raise. This is due to the fact that last year he was hired approximately two months after the start of the fiscal year. His contract for next year runs the full fiscal year.
    The Board also approved a benefit adjustment for six community education employees. This was required to meet stipulations of the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care), which goes into effect Jan. 1, 2014.
    The Board also approved the posting of an RFP for a study of the District's needs as it pertains to buildings, facilities and space. Superintendent Becky Cselovszki said there would be no cost in posting a RFP for this kind of study.
    The Board accepted a bid to replace the rooftop air conditioning unit at Armstrong. The old unit broke down last year.
    The winning bid was from Harty Co. out of Austin in the amount of $43,950. There was a lower bid of several thousand dollars, but it was for a refurbished unit compared to the new unit Harty will be installing. The AC unit that Harty proposed also had a greater cooling capacity.
    There was a preliminary discussion about the School District selling the varsity baseball field to the St. James Youth Baseball Association for a nominal fee.
    Much of the work of preparing the field for games, for current maintenance and repairs is already being done by the association. According to Cselovszki any sale would guarantee that the SJA Saints would always have first choice when it came to scheduling games. Any discussion or action on this issue would not occur until a later Board meeting.
    The meeting lasted a half hour. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be on July 8.
