Fire officials suspect foul play on a fire that took a house located near 7th Ave. N in St. James this last spring.
Officials are urging anyone with information to call 1-800-723-2020. Rewards of up to $2,500 will be given to individuals with any information leading to the identification of persons responsible for the fire.
Initial reports indicated that the fire began on the southeast side of the home, but quickly spread to the rest of the house. Local fire departments continued to work on the home until 1:25 a.m. when they finally left for the night.
Fire consumed home at near 7th Ave. N in less than six minutes and the house was a total loss. It is scheduled to be removed from the property July 15.
According to the USFA's National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) from 2008 through 2010, an estimated 16,800 intentionally set residential fires occur annually in the United States.
These fires result in an estimated 280 deaths, 775 injuries, and $593 million in property loss each year. The average dollar loss for an intentionally set fire in a residential building is $21,320.
The fatality rate for intentionally set residential fires was more than twice that of other residential building fires.
Arson is also dangerous for those individuals looking to fight the fire. Firefighters risk their lives so they can save people from burning buildings. Every fire is a danger to a firefighter and the people living at the fire-site.
