  • The Burt Lofgren Memorial Award was first handed out in 1984 in honor and memory of Burt, who was a valuable and influential member of the St. James community and a long time area farmer.
The plaque was fit for 30 years of winners and the award is set to expire this July during the 2013 Watonwan County Fair with the award being given to it's thirtieth winner.
The award is given to a student who best exemplifies the way in which Burt lived, said Vonnie Mathistad.
"He was a very good farmer, and a perfect guy all the way around," said Vonnie. "He was involved in church council and president of so many things."
FFA and 4-H boards observe students throughout the year. Judges then determine whether a student's attitude and willingness to help others will make them a candidate for the award. They then choose a student and present the award during the Watonwan County Fair. This year's award will be given Saturday morning of the fair.
A small plaque will be given to the award winner, while the large memorial plaque will remain in the University of Minnesota Extention office.
