The St. James “Concert In the Park” next concert will be Thursday, June 18, 2013.
This popular series of concerts, sponsored by the City of St. James and a grant from the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council, will continue it's season with a talented group of teenagers from New Ulm, Minnesota who call themselves the “Barton’s Hollow Bluegrass Band.”
The six-piece bluegrass, folk, and acoustic band is made up of youth with the oldest member 21 and the youngest member who is 16 years old.
Their story began June 2011 when Kiley Ellingson decided she wanted to get a group together to play an open stage at the Minnesota Home Grown Kickoff. She contacted Ian Kimmel, whose father Dick is a very well known mandolin player, and Hugh Stier to get a start and worked up a few songs.
The three of them performed for the first time at the Ranch House Live Open Stage at MBOTMA. Later that year, at the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival, the group met the Halverson Brothers, John and Dan.
With all the great music and support Barton’s Hollow became the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-time Music Festival 2011 Talent Show winners and performed in front of thousands of people on the Main stage. The group has performed with many well known artists including closing for Sierra Hull & Highway 111, opening for Dale Ann Bradley and other noted artists.
The musicians include Ian Kimmel (vocals, mandolin, guitar), Kiley Ellingson (vocals, guitar, fiddle), Hugh Stier (vocals, banjo, guitar), Carl Sones (vocals, guitar), Daniel Halvorson (fiddle, vocals), John Halvorson (bass, vocals).
Barton's Hollow will perform in St. James’ Memorial Park at 7:00 pm. An Ice Cream Social put on by Wellspring will follow the performance. There is no charge for this event.
