After winning their opening round game, St. James VFW Post 1914’s season ended last week with two losses in the double elimination VFW Tournament.
VFW started with a close win over a New Ulm team, then the 1914 boys got hammered by Fairmont and were eliminated by Blue Earth in a close game.
St James 4, New Ulm Silver 3
Post 1914 scored two in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a win. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Dylan Wolle doubled with one out. Tyler Witcraft singled and Ryan Witcraft walked. Bransen Peterson doubled in Wolle and Witcraft.
In the top of the 4th starting pitcher David Bradley allowed his first hit. New Ulm ultimately got three hits in the inning to tie it up.
New Ulm took the lead with a pair of walks and a hit in the fifth.
In the bottom of sixth David Bradley led off with a single. After the next batter was retired Brady Halvorson doubled.
Both players scored on wild pitches to the next VFW batter.
It got a little tense in the top of the seventh as there was an error and two walks. The bases were loaded when Bradley struck out the last batter for the win.
David went all seven innings allowing five hits and two runs while striking out seven. Bransen Peterson had two doubles and Brady Halvorson had two hits.
Fairmont 10-0 over St. James
Fairmont scored five in the first inning and never looked back. VFW only had one hit by David Bradley in the second inning. Bransen Peterson took the loss. The game was called after five due to the ten run rule.
Blue Earth wins 3-0 over St. James
It was a typical elimination game in that it was tight and well pitched with not very many hits. Blue Earth got two hits and two runs to start the bottom of the first off Dylan Wolle. Dylan left after two innings due to cramps. Derek Meyer pitched four innings and allowed only one unearned run in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning Tyler Witcraft entered with bases loaded and got out of the inning with no runs allowed. Blue Earth pitcher allowed only two hits. One to Lucas Fredin in the third and Tyler Witcraft in the seventh. Dylan Wolle took the loss. VFW ended season with a 7-8 record.
