  • Mental, emotional and physical development are important for growing children, whether they are two months old or teenagers. The best way to assess these developments is with a well-child exam, which Mayo Clinic Health System in St. James offers year-round.
“The well-child exam is a comprehensive checkup that helps to support children or teenagers’ health and well-being,” says Jennifer Langbehn, D.O., Mayo Clinic Health System in St. James family physician. “Our compassionate providers evaluate young children to measure if they are meeting developmental milestones. For older children and teens, we provide sports physicals and education for healthy lifestyle choices.”
During the lifestyle education conversation, providers and patients discuss major topics of concern, including drinking, drug use, weight issues, the importance of helmet and seat belt use, and sexuality.
Mayo Clinic Health System providers test younger children for developmental milestones based on their age. For example, at two weeks, providers monitor the infant’s feeding habits and growth. At five years old, knowledge of the ABCs, basic colors and home address is tested. The provider teams will also use this time to update immunizations if needed.
Based on exam results, health care provider teams advise parents if their child or teen should begin, change or continue specific therapies or health regimens to improve overall health and well-being. Common issues addressed include problems with hearing, speaking and walking.
“The health of the children in our community is extremely important,” adds Dr. Langbehn. “We want to ensure that students are prepared for school, sports and life in general. A well-child exam is a great first step toward achieving that.”
