  • The Watonwan County Relay For Life wrapped up at about 3 a.m. Saturday morning having raised more than $90,000 for cancer research.
The Relay for Life organization invests more than $3.5 billion in cancer research each year and is the largest non-governmental investor of cancer research in the nation.
Opening ceremonies took place at 7 p.m. following dances from Just for Kix and Dancing with a Purpose. The luminaria were lit at about 9:30 p.m. while a "Light of Hope" lighting ceremony took place.
The weather was a bit chilly for participants, but the wind died down making the event markedly better – calming the nerves of some Relay For Life supporters who worried the wind would make lighting the luminaria impossible.
While the temperatures dipped to the lower fifties, participants continued walking – with teams leaving at least one individual on the track throughout the entire event.
Until there is a cure for cancer the Relay For Life will continue to walk in order to raise money for research and treatment. More than 4 million people come together in events across the nation for the Relay For Life.
The Relay For Life walk was created to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. The strength of survivors inspires others to continue to fight. It was also created to remember loved ones lost to the disease.
