The 78th annual Minnesota Music Teachers Association Honors Concert was held at the Minneapolis Convention Center May 18, 2013.
The event consisted of 30 compositions for piano ensemble played by almost 700 winners of the MMTA State Piano Contest.
The Students performed on 20 Steinway grand pianos provided by Schmitt Music Company. Throughout the state, 3,334 students registered to compete in the state piano contest. Preliminary contests were yest in January at various locations around the state.
From those events, 1,718 students representing 378 teachers were chosen to compete at the state event which was held at the University of Minnesota March 16 and 17.
From the 1,690 who competed 700 winners were chosen to perform in the ensemble honors concert.
Local students who performed were Emma Anderson – daughter of Mark and Jesse Anderson and student of Myrna Eppeland, Kierra Curry – daughter of Caleb and Melissa Curry and student of Janey Norell and Jack Westman – son of Scott and Molly Westman and student of Myrna Eppeland.
Also chosen as a winner but unable to perform was Madison Brey – daughter of Tim and Cindy Brey and student of Chris Pitcher.
Students who perform must learn and memorize a duet part and attend at least three rehearsals at Schmitt Music in Brooklyn Center prior to the dress rehearsal and event at the convention center.
