The Leavenworth Orioles swept the St. James A’s in the Tomahawk East League divisional playoffs this past weekend. The A’s lost a hard fought, 7-6 contest Friday in Leavenworth and were shutout in St. James on Sunday, 3-0.
Leavenworth beats St. James 7-6
The A’s fought back from a 6-1 deficit after five innings, but their comeback fell short despite banging out 17 hits on the night.
Offensive leaders for the A’s were Joe Krause and Joe Hager who each went three for five. Krause had two doubles and two RBIs. Hager had a double. Ryan Menssen, Austin Pinke, Brandon Menssen, Craig Nelson and Nate Ewert had two hits each.
The A’s had runners on base in every inning but left 14 runners on base in the game.
A’s starter David Krause got off to a rough start giving up a three run home run to Andy Cook in the first inning. For the night, he went four innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked two. Dusty Pfeiffer pitched well in relief, throwing five innings giving up one run on three hits.
He struck out one and did not walk a batter. Krause was charged with the loss.
Leavenworth 3, A’s 0
After collecting 17 hits in Leavenworth on Friday, the A’s offense was eager to get back at it on Sunday in St. James. There was one big difference in this game however – Briar Braulick. The Orioles starter shut down the A’s for the second time this month as the A’s offense could only generate three hits. They never had a runner reach as far as third base.
A’s starter Matt Dahl pitched very well with six strong innings. He gave up three runs – all unearned – on five hits. He struck out one and walked three.
The strong pitching continued with reliever Kyle Pinke who threw the final three innings, blanking the Orioles on two hits. He struck out five and walked three.
With the 2-0 series win, Leavenworth advances to the Region 2C Tournament that begins on Saturday.
The A’s finished the season with a 10-15 record.
