  • And it begins...... The 2013-2014 high school sports season gets underway tomorrow when the SJA girls tennis team travels to Mankato to take part in a quadrangular tennis tournament.
The Saints will be competing against host Mankato West, Orono and Marshall Senior.
The girls just began practice this past Monday, so the Saints had very little time to work the kinks out.
In a way it makes sense for girls tennis to get things going when it comes to the Saints fall sports.
The St. James summer tennis programs gave the girls ample opportunity to work on their game. There were summer camps and multiple tennis tournaments the players on this year's Saints girls tennis team participated in.
What's going to have to develop in short order is who's going to be playing at the varsity level. The Saints return three of the four singles starters from last year, but just one of the six doubles players who formed the three doubles teams last year.
Many of the returning girls had doubles experience last year, but sorting out who is going to be playing on the three doubles teams is going to be one of the big challenges for Head Coach Les Zellmann in the early part of the season.
Senior Acacia Foss will most likely form one half of the number one doubles team. Coach Zellmann will use the three matches on Friday to play several different athletes in different doubles configurations as a step in determining the team's starting lineup for the fall campaign.
The Saints are traditionally a good tennis team. Is this a year the Saints reload for another run at an SCC championship, or is it a rebuilding year? We'll just have to see how that plays out.
