  • The VFW Post 1914 baseball team finished the season 7-8 and a review of the hitting and pitching statistics go a long way to explaining why this was around a .500 team.
In both categories there were both good and not so good stats. Combine them and you get middling won, lost results.
Coach Steve Witcraft said Post 1914, "Played well in every game but two."
Over the course of the season Coach Witcraft said several times that St. James VFW was not a good hitting team. That's reflected in the team's batting average of .227.
Several VFW starters had good summers at the plate. Tyler Witcraft led the team with a .368 batting average and a .888 OPS (on base plus slugging).
Branson Peterson hit .313 and Brady Halvorson hit .297.
Pitching tells a similar story. The team had an elevated ERA of 4.72, but there were some solid individual performances.
David Bradley had a great summer. In five games he had a team leading 1.50 ERA. He had a 3-0 WL record with a save. He topped the team in innings pitched with 23.33 and struck out 20 compared to just 12 walks.
Peterson, Witcraft and Dylan Wolle were the other pitches who tossed most of the remaining innings for VFW.
Peterson showed some promise as a power pitcher striking out 19 in 20 innings, but he walked 13 and hit two more, which contributed to ERA of 5.95
Witcraft also threw with some velocity. He struck out 14 and walked six. His WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings) was the lowest on the team at 1.38. Bradley's WHIP was 1.41 and the team's WHIP was 1.94. Witcraft's ERA was a respectable 3.50.
Wolle had the second most wins on the team with two. Control was an issue as he struck out nine but walked 18 and hit two batters.
Coach Witcraft said VFW had some good baseball players. There is some upside to what these players can do in future years.
