America’s growing obesity rate has become a local and national health concern. To learn the truth about this epidemic, community members are invited to attend screenings of the acclaimed four-part HBO documentary series, “The Weight of the Nation,” in the main conference room of Mayo Clinic Health System in St. James, 1101 Moulton and Parsons Drive.
The events take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26 and are co-sponsored by Healthy Families, Healthy Future; Mayo Clinic Health System in St. James; and Thrivent Community – St. James Area.
“It’s important for community members to witness the effects that obesity has on our nation,” says Kim Nelson, Mayo Clinic Health System registered dietitian. “Participants will learn how obesity affects the health care system, the health of the nation and them personally. The Weight of the Nation documentary is a compelling format that will help to convey this message in an effective and entertaining way.”
The “Weight of the Nation” topics include:
Sept. 5: Consequences
Sept. 12: Choices
Sept. 19: Children in Crisis
Sept. 26: Challenges
The movie screenings will include discussion, door prizes and refreshments. People can attend one of the events or may choose to attend them all.
