The St. James Area Saints cross country team got the fall running season under way last week at a ten team meet in Fairmont.
In addition to the host Cardinals, other teams competing against the Saints were from BEA, JCC, LSH, Medford, NRHEG, St. Peter, SSC and USC.
In this meet the athletes only compete against people in the same grade.
The top five boys and girls in a grade received a medal. To get the team score they added up the times of each teams top five runners.
The Saints were missing several runners on the girls team.
The Saints who were medalists were senior Tyler Witcraft, who earned a fouth place; sophomore Noah Pinke, who earned a 3rd place; freshman Eber Vazquez-Vite, won first place; and 8th grader Ricardo Vite came in second place.
According to Cross Country Head Coach Brad Stark, virtually every runner improved their time from a year ago. We are looking to see continued improvement throughout the entire year.
To get the team score the times of each team's top five runners were added up. The boys started the season out strong finishing second in the meet.
As many of the team's girl athletes had other commitments, the Saints only had five runners competing in this meet. That meant the girls finished sixth.
Of the girls who ran, seventh grader Guadalupe Moriel, finished just out of medal contenting finishing sixth.
