Madelia will be the home of the 2013 Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener, to be held Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12.
“We’re excited and honored to be home of this year’s celebration,” said Dan Madsen, Madelia city administrator. “We are proud to be the ‘Pheasant Capitol of Minnesota’ and look forward to showcasing all that our city and area have to offer.”
This is the third annual Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener, initiated by Gov. Mark Dayton in 2011.
The Governor wrote in an invitation, “This year the Governor’s Pheasant Opener will showcase the outstanding pheasant hunting opportunities in the Madelia area of south central Minnesota.
“The grassland and farm fields here provide plenty of habitat for pheasants and draw many hunters to this area every year.
“It is an event that honors and promotes Minnesota’s longstanding hunting tradition. Each fall brings a season of anticipation, excitement and companionship for hunters in our state.”
Previous host communities were Montevideo and Marshall. The event highlights the many hunting, recreational, travel and local opportunities that host communities have to offer visitors.
Dayton plans to again lead elected officials, dignitaries and celebrity hunters who will participate in the event. The public will also be invited to take part in activities throughout the weekend.
Events run from 10:30 am though a concert starting at 9 pm on Friday and 6 am through 2 pm on Saturday.
The event is being coordinated by the city of Madelia, Madelia Chamber of Commerce, Explore Minnesota Tourism and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
