  • The Saint James Area Saints boys cross country team won the All Saints Invitational and the girls cross county team finished second at St. Peter last Friday.
The meet had been delayed due to the heatwave. There was a break in the heat on Friday and the meet started at 9 am, so conditions were tolerable for the athletes.
It was a four team meet, and the SJA Saints were competing against St. Peter, St. Mary's Sleepy Eye and the LCWM....Knights. A more accurate term would be the 'Almost All Saints Invitational'.
No matter, our Saints did exceptionally well. On the boys' side the team scores were SJA 40, LCWM 48, St. Mary's 60 and St. Peter 86.
The girls' scores were St. Mary's 36, St. James 40, St. Peter 48 and LCWM did not field a full team.
Scores are computed by adding the finish order of the top five finishers of a team.
For the boys team, the Saints demonstrated great depth. Tyler Witcraft finished 3rd with a time of 19:15.
Eber Vazquez-Vite finished 6th with a time of 20:20; Miguel Gonzalez came in 8th with a time of 20:50; Jory Petersen came in 11th with a time of 21:03 and Mario Garcia finished 12th with a time of 2:13.
The Saints showed great depth 10 harriers placing in the top 20 finishers. Four other Saints finished in under 22 minutes time, so SJA displayed a team that could have several runners finish in the top five.
Witcraft was the only senior of the Saints who finished in the top five on the boys side.
Runners who finished under 22 minutes were Connor Engel, Aaron Askeland, Thor Henderson and Ty Nelson.
Ashley Lahti finished 3rd place for the Saints with a time of 13:30. A LCWM runner came in 2nd and as that team did not have enough runners, Ashley finish for the team score was 2nd place.
Mackinzee Miest came in individual 4th, team third with a time of 13:38; Lindsey Kulseth came in 13th, team 10th with a time of 15:34; Ashley Cuellar came in 14th, team 11th with 15:43 and Glenda Hector came in 17th, team 14 with a time of 16:03.
Sleepy Eye St. Mary's did not have a runner finish any better than 4th place in team scoring, but had four runners finish in the top eight on the team side and that gave the team win to St. Mary's.
All of the SJA top five finishers for the girls were underclassmen.
The girls race was shorted from a 4K to a 3200 meters race, but the boys ran their normal 5k distance.
The Saints also ran well in the junior high competition. The girls were led by Sadie Goossen with a 2nd place finish and Lupita Mariel who placed 4th.
The boys were led by Lukas Pierson with a 1st, Ricardo Vite in 3rd, and Parker Henderson in 5th. The junior high race was at a distance somewhere between a mile and 1.25 miles.

The meet is scheduled to start at 4:30 pm.
