  • The 97˚ F. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, broke the old record of 92˚ set on that date in 1978 by a wide margin.
The new record was 22˚ above the average high and the morning low of 68˚ was 16˚ above the average low.
Tuesday’s record high was the latest in September that it’s been that hot in St. James. It was one degree off the all time September high for St. James. It was 98˚ once on Sept. 7.
The Tuesday temperature spike ends the late summer heatwave. The heat of summer began in earnest with a one day temperature on May 14, as the mercury climbed to 102˚ F. That was the all time hottest day in the month of May in St. James. In fact, it was the only time the temp has climbed above 100˚ in May in St. James.
Now we may have bookended the summer with another blazing hot day in September. That’s a qualified may have as nothing is certain with the weather.
However, the 10 day forecast has no highs coming close to 90˚. In fact, temperatures over the weekend are predicted to be in the mid to upper 60s, which would be 30 degrees cooler than Tuesday’s record high.
