At 85 years old, retired physician Dr. Keith Moulton still dons scrubs every other Thursday and helps transport eye surgery patients to their recovery rooms at Mayo Clinic Health System in St. James. He also spends part of his time there chatting with patients and former colleagues. After 59 years in St. James, he’s developed relationships with many community members and still has the desire to make patients feel better.
“I still like helping people. That’s what we’re all here for,” says Moulton. “A fella’s got to have something to do, and I hope it helps (the patients and staff) out too.”
Dr. Moulton is still very familiar with the health care setting after retiring just under three years ago. The medical center patients and staff have been extremely grateful to have Dr. Moulton around.
“He is a blessing to have in our department,” says Kristal Leuer, registered nurse in the surgery and outpatient department at Mayo Clinic Health System in St. James. “He always has a smile on his face and you can truly tell he enjoys coming in. All the patients adore him and love to see him. Not to mention, he’s a great helper!”
Leuer says that patients she consults with before their surgery often voice their excitement about having Dr. Moulton there to transport them. But it’s all in a day’s work for Dr. Moulton.
“It’s been real fun,” adds Moulton. “A lot of these patients used to be my patients, so volunteering at Mayo Clinic Health System has been very enjoyable.”
Dr. Moulton and Dr. Roger Parsons set up the first medical practice in St. James in 1954 and practiced until December 2010 – well into their 80s. In fact, the street that the current medical center resides on is named after Drs. Moulton and Parsons, paying tribute to their many years of providing health care to the St. James community. In addition, Dr. Moulton served on the hospital board of directors for more than 10 years and currently sits on the hospital’s foundation board.
“The history, knowledge and warmth that Dr. Moulton brings to our medical center is immeasurable,” says Ryan Smith, Mayo Clinic Health System in St. James administrator. “He delivers service to our patients on so many levels. Not only does he physically transfer patients throughout the medical center, he provides them with a sense of comfort and support in times when they may be feeling vulnerable.”
Mayo Clinic Health System in St. James derives much of its energy and day-to-day success from its dedicated and compassionate community volunteers. Much like Dr. Moulton, all the volunteers at the medical center contribute to patients, providers and allied health staff in countless ways.
