The authentic Mexican restaurant in downtown St. James, Los Potros, will be holding their official grand opening this Sunday, Sept. 15.
The restaurant had a soft opening late last month and has been doing steady business since Aug. 31. The grand opening event is designed to get the community involved and celebrate the new business in downtown St. James with a fun time and delicious food.
Owners Maria and Gustavo Hidalgo ran a successful Mexican restaurant in Mankato for two years before making the move to St. James. Maria said the move to St. James was on their mind for some time. They like the small town feel and believe this will be a wonderful place to raise their children.
“Our kids love the city, and we love it,” said Maria. “Having three boys its nice to have such a welcoming community.”
Making the move with them is Gus. Gus learned to cook authentic Mexican food while working in his uncle’s catering business in Mexico. His flare can be tasted in all of the dishes at Los Potros.
One dish many will enjoy Sunday is the ever-so-popular Molcajete Montezuma. This is a two-person meat lovers dinner that will leave even the hungriest of eaters satisfied. It consists of ribeye steak, chicken breast, pork carnitas, shrimp, homemade chorizo and mexican sausage and is one of the hardiest dishes on the menu.
The entire menu at Los Portros is authentic and unique. Many special items have been added since the move and all sauces are made in house, including a special ranch sauce and all salad sauce. The Hidalgos are sure to use only the freshest produce and highest quality ingredients in all of their meals – which are made when ordered to keep freshness a top priority.
Los Potros has also taken extra steps to keep business as local as possible, by purchasing bread from Schmidtz Bakery down the street and having their signs done locally. The Hidalgos were very active in their community in Mankato and are looking forward to joining the community here in St. James.
“We like to be a part of the community we’re in,” said Maria.
Special this Sunday, each table will receive a free dessert of mini fried ice cream or mini cheese cake chimis along with their meal. Margaritas will also be on sale at $1.99. The staff at Los Potros will also be taking photos of willing customers for a collage to decorate their wall.
