  • There have been seven incidents reported since the traffic of Highway 60 was first detoured to Highway 10 during the expansion project of Highway 60. The latest involved a Toyota Sienna with five passengers including a baby and a semi truck driven by Abdul-Jalil Umar of Glendale, AZ.
According to the incident report, the semi was traveling westbound on Watonwan County Road 10 when it failed to stop at the stop sign at the County Road 5 intersection. The semi collided with the Toyota Sienna, which was traveling southbound on County Road 5.
Responding to the incident was the Watonwan County Sheriff's Office, the St. James Fire Department and Ambulance, Ormsby/Odin Fire Department and Butterfield Fire Department.
The driver of the Toyota, 33-year-old Jennifer Cullenward was air lifted from the scene and sustained a serious injury. All others involved in the crash sustained no apparent injuries, with the exception of 38-year-old Brian Cullenward, who had a non-life threatening injury.
The county has noted that the intersection has been a problem for accidents since the detour was first introduced. A temporary light has been added at the intersection and additional rumble strips have been installed.
The Watonwan County Sheriff's Office has continued to patrol the route diligently, as the county continues to look at solutions which will make the detour a safer travel route.
