  • 4-H at the Minnesota State Fair had 5,752 youth exhibitors.  There were 2,844 4-H building exhibits, 295 Arts In participants and 2,885 livestock shown.  There were more than 12,000 total nights of lodging for youth, more than 30,000 meals served to 4-H youth and staff and more than 320,000 visitors through the 4-H building.
Watonwan County had 31 4-H members and four chaperones represented at Livestock weekend at the 2013 State Fair.  The following Watonwan County 4-H’ers achieved purple ribbons and Reserve Champion ribbons:
●Liana Blomgren from Butterfield received a Purple Ribbon for her Pigeon Demonstration and a Reserve Champion for her Doves.
●Tyler Gustafson from Madelia earned a Reserve Champion for his Bantam Breeding Chicken.
●Brandon Hjelmer from St. James received a Reserve Champion for his Fancy Pigeon project.
●Ethan Stick from St. James earned a Purple Ribbon for his Netherland Dwarf Rabbit.
●Lukas Pierson took second in his age level for his Dairy Interview which earned him a t-shirt and he went on to place high enough to be a “chair winner”.
●In Chef for the Day, Nora Schmidt and Kinzee Miest from St. James and Clay Gieseke from South Branch competed and scored 92 out of 100 points.
For General exhibits judged at the State Fair, 39 youth and three chaperones represented Watonwan County 4-H.  Out of the 39, 25 earned Blue Ribbons.  Four girls competed in Fashion Review with Gabrielle Nett from St. James earning a place in the “Court of Honor” with a purple ribbon placing.  Connor Engel, Callie and Michael Coleman all from St. James, earned Purple Ribbons for their Performing Arts performances.  Lukas Pierson from Butterfield earned Purple with his “Tornado Safety” exhibit.
Returning for her third year was Rachel Kircher from St. James participating in Arts In at the State Fair.
Comments from State Fair include being proud of our youth on their projects, behavior and sportsmanship at the State Fair.  Research shows that youth who participate in 4-H are more likely to contribute to their communities than those involved in other youth development programs.
4-H continually works to reach new groups of youth in rural, suburban and urban communities.  If you are interested in joining 4-H, call the Extension Office at 507-375-1275.
Congratulations to all the Watonwan County 4-H youth who participated at the 2013 Minnesota State Fair!
