There was a special meeting Tuesday night in St. James to decide whether or not a cold storage facility could be added onto the already existing fire hall.
The request to expand the existing structure was approved unanimously earlier in the day by the St. James Planning commission. There was just one phone call regarding the expansion and after explaining what the expansion would involve, there were no residential issues with the project.
Volunteers from the fire department will do most of the work to build the structure, with the concrete work being done by professionals. There was some hesitation in allowing volunteers to do the work on the project. Council members were unsure that volunteers would be covered in the event of an accident.
City Attorney Steve Sunde assured council members that because the fire department personnel are considered city employees there would be no liability issues. All of the volunteers are covered under workman comp. With this assurance and the assurance that no other volunteers would be used, the city council voted unanimously to allow for the expansion of the building.
