  • Thrivent Donates to Food Shelf

    • email print
  • The holiday season is a bullish time for charitable giving, and the Watonwan County food shelf has been the recipient of some of that goodwill. “During the month of November, we asked our member churches to have a 'noisy' donation which Thrivent would match,” said Kathy Rathman, financial director for the Watonwan County chapter of Thrivent Financial. “Our churches collected $965, and our county chapter of Thrivent Financial has matched that.” Deb Schmillen, the food shelf's coordinator, said people have been “extremely generous,” and, “A little goes a long way.” But, there's a definite need, because the shelf is busier than ever. “(The giving) has been amazing, and it should get us through the winter months,” she said. “We are busy with all the cuts to food stamps and job benefits, and we may see more (families in need) yet this winter.” For the full story, please see the January 9 print edition of the St. James Plaindealer.
