Bruce Springsteen
The writers of this blog are not music critics, and they don't consider a second (or third, fourth or fifth) mortgage to be a perfectly reasonable course of action to pay for front-row tickets, but despite being a whole lot more middle aged than they were when they first put \x34Born in the U.S.A.\x34 or \x34The River\x34 down on the turntable, still feels like Bruce has something -- OK, a lot of things -- to say about our country and the way we live our lives, things that not a lot of other artists are saying. And whether he's talking about the knife that can cut this pain from your heart, the house that's waiting for you to walk in or what that flag flying over the courthouse means, he's nailing down feelings that are so universal that they can raise your spirits and break your heart at the same time. Plus, let¹s face it, the man rocks.

1) Bruce’s arms. I mean, come on.

2) I think Dave Lifton nailed Chris Christie’s likely reaction to the traffic jam song: “HE SANG ABOUT ME!!!!”

3) Bruce is dead-on about the horse-sized duck. I’ve actually given this some thought, and the only thing worse would be a giant rooster. (Those suckers are nasty, even at the normal size.)

4) “It’s not the time in your life, it’s the life in your time.” Am I the only one who thought of “Dirty Dancing”? (Besides Phil Dunphy, I mean.)

5) Nice shout-out to Stevie in Norway before “High Hopes” — wouldn’t want anybody to think that dude in the baseball cap replaced him.

6) Is it me, or does Tom Morello have no rhythm whatsoever? It almost looks like he just snuck up there with his guitar and starting jumping around, like Bob Dylan’s Soy Bomb.

7) Always thrilled to see Patti strumming and singing with her serious concert face — here’s hoping she’s back this tour. I miss the “Easy Money” duet!

8) “Heaven’s Wall,” really? At least this showed that it will work well as a showcase for the extra-large E Street Band, and I bet the Nils-Tom guitar-off could really take off at a real show. But I think he would have moved more records with “Frankie Fell in Love.”

9) I like how Fallon always holds up the vinyl version.

10) Nice bonus performance “Just Like Fire Would.” Hey, that’s a pun! I just got it.

Watch the full episode here in the U.S.
