Watonwan County Human Services Director Rich Collins was fired Wednesday following a performance evaluation that began Friday and concluded yesterday. The Watonwan County Board appoints the head of Human Services, and they're currently considering candidates to act as interim director until a permanent replacement can be found, said County Auditor Don Kuhlman. Collins was promoted to his position as director in June 1995 after spending five years as fiscal supervisor in Human Services, according to county documents. The county board discussed his leadership performance January 17 in a closed session, and--during an open session January 22--the board decided, unanimously, that they'd lost confidence in his ability to manage the department. Collins was paid for the full pay period ending January 25, but he is not eligible to cash out accrued vacation or sick leave, according to records. He had no present or past complaints on file at the time of his dismissal. For more information, please see the January 30 print edition of the St. James Plaindealer.
