  • Losing Weight, and Keeping it Off, with Group Support

  • After spending many years in Mayo Community Health Systems--St. James, the local chapter of Weight Watchers migrated to the community building in mid-February because they needed more space, said Jane Wolle, the co-leader of the group.
    They meet each Thursday from 5-6 p.m., and the support from the roughly 20-member group is valuable in the quest to lose weight--and keep that weight off--Wolle said. Meetings start with the weigh-in at 5 p.m. People receive encouragement if they haven’t lost weight, and praise if they have.
    “People don’t know how to eat anymore,” Wolle said. So, Weight Watchers emphasizes eating fruits and vegetables, and it dissuades dieters from processed carbohydrates.
    Weight Watchers offers an array of snacks, because people are often ensnared with their snacking--particularly with a lack of portion control, Wolle said. “Weight Watchers has really expanded their brand.”
    Each weekly meeting has a different theme, and the emphasis March 20 was exercise. Julie Walker and Wolle are co-leaders of the group, having stepped in at the end of 2013 when the erstwhile leader resigned--“We didn’t want our chapter to close,” Walker said.
    This local chapter is running an open-house throughout the month of April, Wolle added.
