After a long, cold, and wet winter, the St. James Area boys tennis team played their home opener Tuesday against Faribault, but blustery winds and brisk temperatures made for inimical conditions.
“It’s ‘playable,’” said Saints head coach Les Zellmann. “I was very concerned (around 1 p.m.) about the cold, but I’m (pleasantly) surprised.”
The Saints defeated the Falcons 5-2. Winners included John Foss (6-2, 6-0), Sandin Skow (6-0, 6-1), and Brandon Hjelmer (6-0, 6-1) in singles and the team of Cole Skow and Colin Hoppe (6-1, 6-1) in doubles. In addition, the team of Thor Henderson and Moises Ramirez also won a point via forfeit--Faribault didn’t have enough players to fill that match.
The Saints remain at home for their next match, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against New Ulm. After that match, they’ll host a tournament at home Saturday morning.
