After 11 years as an officer for the St. James Police Department, Rochelle Hanson started her new job as investigator for the Watonwan County Sheriff’s Department April 21.

“I wanted to expand my law enforcement experience and the welfare fraud investigations were intriguing,” she said. “I hadn’t done that before, but I’d done criminal investigations for the police department.”

Hanson was born and raised in Eveleth, Minn., a small town north of Duluth in Saint Louis County, and she served as a police officer there before coming to St. James. She has an A.A.S. degree in law enforcement from Hibbing Community College and is currently working toward a bachelor’s in law enforcement through Metropolitan State University--located in the Twin Cities.

“Since I was nine, I wanted to (be in law enforcement),” she said. “I was drawn by the excitement and the change--it’s not always the same.”
