  • Though the final day of school is usually a jovial atmosphere, but the mood turned serious at St. James High School Thursday when a 13-year-old was arrested for bringing a gun to school.
The pellet/BB handgun was a replica of a Walther semi-automatic handgun and could easily be mistaken for the weapon, according to the St. James Police Department. The male seventh-grader was released to the custody of a parent and ordered not to be on student property; charges for the student will be possession of a BB gun on school property, a misdemeanor. Charges will be filed through the Watonwan County Attorney’s Office.
Staff at the high school received information that the student had brought the replica gun to school, and they immediately secured both the student and the backpack containing the gun, according to the S.J.P.D. The student and the backpack (and gun) were seperated at the time, so it was retrieved from a different area of the school.
The police were then called, and they took the student into custody, according to the S.J.P.D. At no time were students, staff, or the suspect in danger.
Parents were notified of the incident late in the afternoon Thursday through the school’s campus portal system.
More information on this story to come as it becomes available.
