  • St. James area sent 16 athletes to Mankato West High School on Saturday morning to compete at the 2A Section meet.
Amelia Collier came in fourth place in the 100 meter dash finals with a time of 12.73 which qualified for state.  She also came in fifth place in the girls 200 and 400 meter.
Katy Hedlund came in second place and qualified for state with her jump of 5’03”.  Zach Brandts placed first in a highly competitive event with his jump of 6’03”.
Zuriel Chacon placed fourth in the 400 meter, and although he didn't qualify for the event, he did as part of the Boys 4x800 relay team, which came in first place.  The team of Chacon, Kody Curry, Noah Pinke and Luke Tansager won by less than a second, with a time of 8:15.51.
There were other Saints who traveled to Mankato over the weekend but didn't advance, ending their season.
Tylar Larson participated in the triple jump but cam in 13th place.  Ashley Lahti came in ninth place in the 1600 meter run.  Mackenzee Miest was seventh in the girls 3200 meter run. Miguel Gonzalez came 12 in the 110 meter hurdles preliminary round.
Madison Carlson's year unfortunately came to an end when she failed to qualify for state at the Discus and shot put after a really great sophomore year with the track and field team. Christopher Johnson competed in the boys Discus and placed sixteenth.
It wasn't all bad news for Saints throwers on Saturday. Blake Collier qualified for state in the shot put and discus throw wheelchair with throws of 10’3” and 20’1”.
The team scores were screwed because each school had a different number of competitors, giving teams with greater numbers more of an opportunity to score.  The St. James Women placed 16th in the team rankings.  The men came in 10th place.
The State Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday afternoon at Hamline University in St. Paul.
