  • During their meeting June 9, the St. James School Board approved the hiring of two new teachers at St. James High School Christopher Yost will come in to teach physical education, while Caitlyn Michele Steffl will be an english and language arts teacher.
Principal Ted Simon said she comes by way of New Ulm and has two years experience while Yost is licensed in adaptive PE and physical education. The high school is still looking to hire a math teacher for the coming school year.
Additionally, the high school will have a “zero hour” this fall, Simon said. The idea was generated through student suggestions, and it’ll allow students to practice time-management skills in preparation for college.
There will be two sections of a college-level geography course; one section will be normal, offered during regular hours, but the other will be offered before school, he said. For students so inclined, they can arrive an hour early for class, and then get out of school an hour earlier than they otherwise would have.
This will only be the case Tuesday-Friday, however; to account for the teachers’ professional learning time on Monday, the students will have the class during their fifth and final hour of the day, Simon said. The class is open only to seniors.
