Back in 1992 a young man was starting a high school career as a cross country runner. Now, 18 years later, he is encouraging ones like himself when he was running to do their best and enjoy the sport.
Mike Heinzman, manager of the St. James Pizza Hut, has been sponsoring the late summer Pizza Hut Cross Country Run since 2005. Heinzman has been with the Pizza Hut organization for 12 years and loves taking part in this event, he treats the winning team of the outing to an “all they can eat pizza night” after the run.
On a perfect late summer afternoon 42 students formed six teams and members ran 5k, 4k, or 2k runs. “This is the largest group I’ve seen out for cross country,” said Coach Kyle Blomgren. As for the kids (Jr-Sr High School), they are great, they all support and get along well with each other,” Blomgren said as he had pizza with the winning team after the run. Blomgren was joined by Heinzman and this reporter and it was fun!
Blomgren commented on some of the experienced runners and said, “I’ve never seen them in better shape.
“Mariah’s Mile Munchers” was the winning team and they devoured lots of pizza, hot wings, pasta and drinks. Members included: Glenda Hector (2k), Mariah Mortenson (4k), Lindsey Kulseth (4k), Johnathan Surber (5k), Adam Bruton (5k) and Ty Nelson (2k).
Johnathan Surber came across the finish line first in the 5k run, Mario Garcia in the 4k run and Wilmer Herrejon for the 2k run.
As I left the Pizza Hut rumors were that Coach Blomgren and Heinzman were going to run a 5k race in Mankato in the near future. Watch for details in this newspaper...and good luck to you two old guys!
The Saint’s Cross Country team had its first official meet Tuesday, August 31, in St. Peter, Mn.
Official times for the 1st Place winners of the Pizza Hut Run were Wilmer Herrejon (2k @ 9:05), Lindsey Kulseth (4-k @ 19:10), and Johnathan Surber (5k @ 17:59).
“We saw some competitive running already. The Pizza Hut Run offers our kids the opportunity to practice race conditions without the pressure of a real meet. It gives our new kids a chance to see what to expect. Thanks to Mike and Pizza Hut for sponsoring this again.” (Coach Kyle Blomgren).
