Dennis Barker, 1973 graduate of SJHS, announced plans to return to St. James for an event on January 17th where he’ll share insights into his novel. The River Road: Becoming a Runner in 1972, Barker’s first book, was recently nominated for an award.
Barker’s day on the 17th will include speaking with students from the college literature class during the day and hosting an event in the Little Theater at St. James Area School from 6:00-7:00 that evening.
“It’s been a long time since I have been to SJHS and it holds many fond memories,” said Barker.
In addition to being an outstanding runner during his high school days in the early 70’s, Barker was also a wrestler and gives credit for his competitive drive and dedication to lessons he learned with the St. James wrestling program. It is no small accident that Barker’s event will take place at SJHS prior to the varsity wrestling match that same evening. It will give wrestling aficionados a chance to check in with Barker and also give Barker a chance to enjoy another night of wrestling with the red and black.
Nominated for Book of the Year by the Track & Field Writers of America, Barker will learn in later February whether he wins the prize.
Come on out to SJHS on the evening of February 17th from 6-7 for Barker’s presentation and stick around to cheer the Saints on to a wrestling victory.
