The St. James Area cross country teams faced tough competition last Saturday as 29 different teams gathered in Montgomery for the Gerry Smith Tritan Invitational which was a 5k race for both boys and girls.

On the boys side the Saints were lead through the chute by standout senior Lucas Pierson who cruised through the finish line with a time of 16:26 to win the race by almost 10 full seconds. Behind him was sophomore Troy Parulski who finished 16th with a time of 17:38. Entering the chute for the Saints was sophomore Seth Pierson and Mauricio Vite who came in 34th and 35th. Pierson finished with a time of 18:16.90 and Vite finished with a time of 18:19.80. Other notable performances for the Saints were senior Ricardo Vite who finished  in the middle of the pack in 62 place with a time of 18:52. The only freshman in the race for the Saints Juan Castaneda finished the race in 79th place with a time of 19:22.30.

Since the meet had some athletes who were competing as individual runners and not as part of a team they did not count when calculating team scores. The Saints ended the meet with 113 points which was good enough for second place only behind Mankato Loyola High School who scored only 77 points. “The boys had a great meet,” said head coach Brad Stark.

On the ladies side the Lady Saints were lead by senior Mackenzie Miest who finished in 19th place with a time of 21:01.10. Finishing behind her was sophomore Norely Sanchez who finished in 101st place with a time of 24:14.90. Behind her was junior Chantel Henderson who finished with a time of 25:05.8. Other notable performances came from junior Jovana Rodriguez who finished with a time of 27:43.30. Senior Adelaida Esqueda also finished the race with a time of 31:14.20.
