Even with no parade this year the long-standing tradition of the St. James Winter Carnival continued.
One of the highlights of the week of activities was on Friday night where the 2017 Winter Carnival Prince and Princess were crowned. Winning the role of Winter Carnival Prince was Easton Tetzloff and winning the role of Princess was Hannah Fredrickson . Since there was no parade this year it was decided that the prince and princess will ride in the 2018 railroad days parade as it has been a tradition for the Winter Carnival prince and princess to ride in the carnival parade. On Friday night children and adults of all ages gathered to the community building to take pictures with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus played by Watonwan County Commissioners chairman Keith Brekken and Cleo Erickson.
There was also something added to this year's carnival that hasn't happened in about 15 years and that was Christmas Tree displays. Non-profit organizations were allowed to decorate and set up a tree in the old Duebers building and community members got to go and donate money to either their favorite decorated tree or causes. In the past, it would be set up at the American Legion but with the large space being available the Chamber decided to take advantage by having it set up there. Some of the organizations that had trees set up included the St. James Ambulance Department, community Ed, 840 Foundation along with many others. The display was available to the public on Friday and Saturday.
