“Thursday afternoon I was driving just north of the Bible Baptist Church on the east side of Crookston and noticed this American Avocet in the ditch. It's a shorebird with an upturned beak and quite a handsome dude or "dudess" at that. It was obviously a migrant but they do nest in the area on occasion. It has been an unusual spring to say the least. This fuzzy photo was taken with my cell phone which shows how close I was. I also saw a Whooping Crane by my house 4 miles south of Gentilly on March 29 but I couldn't get my camera out in time. Pretty exciting since it was only my second sighting in Minnesota. Ordinarily they migrate through farther west in the Dakotas on their way to their nesting ground in Wood Buffalo National Park in northern Alberta.
