Norm Emerson, retired St. James school teacher, was at Northside on Wednesday, January 26th, explaining to fourth grade students how they could have their own indoor planetarium at home. Emerson, who taught Earth and Physical Science, took students through a software program they can download into their computers at home called Stellarium Guide.
Emerson has been busy visiting classrooms and other groups explaining the software which allows individuals the chance to track the stars and planets. He does so in a way that anyone can use it.
Fourth grade students of John Becker, Dan Reinhart, Pat Bradley and Cindy Torkelson found the presentation very interesting and afterwards asked Mr. Emerson several questions about stars: How bright are they? How far away are they? If he had heard of some new recently named stars? Emerson finds it rewarding when students ask questions. He also enjoys having time to do special presentations like the one he did Wednesday as well as working with 2nd and 3rd graders once or twice a week.
Norm along with his retired teaching friend Dale Hedlund help out each year at the 6th grade outdoor lab conducted at Meadowlark Outdoor Lab.
