Name: Kathy Hoffman Classes: 3rd-5th grade
Fun fact: Kathy says she’s a huge fan of the Vikings. She describes herself as a football mom perfectly content to watch six hours of football on Sundays.
St. Paul’s Lutheran School is happy to welcome Mrs. Kathy Hoffman into their full-time staff. Kathy will be teaching the 3rd-5th graders in this, her first full-time teaching job. Kathy has spent her whole life in St. James where she now resides with husband Scott and her four children: Josh, 17; Anna, 16; Corey 14; and Jacob, 12.
With her children getting older, Kathy decided to venture into teaching full-time for the first time. Last year she substitute taught 2-5 times a month, filling in for the entire St. Paul’s staff, so she has experience -- not to say raising four kids wasn’t enough experience already!
Kathy is a 1993 graduate of Mankato State University, with a major in Phy-ed and Coaching. She earned her teacher’s license this last spring, with the idea that she’d do more substitute teaching. However, when St. Paul’s Principal Phillip Haefner learned he’d have an opening heading into the 2009-10 school year, he called Kathy.
“The plan was to continue persuing subbing,” says Kathy. “But I was offered the position in February and I took it.”
Kathy says having the kids on a full-time basis is exciting because she can utilize different teaching methods -- more so than if she she were substituting. That’s important to Kathy because she has a vision for how she wants to teach.
“We’ll be integrating computers into the classroom,” says Kathy. “I want to incorporate interactive material on the web and play games that get kids excited about learning.”
St. Paul’s 3rd-5th grade room has four computers for Kathy and her 11 students to utilize, so there should be no shortage of projects to work with.
When I spoke with her on Friday, four days before school began at St. Paul’s, she was chomping at the bit to get the school year started.
“I can’t wait. It’s been fun planning the year all summer. But I need school to start.”
