Each year, the Minnesota Board on Aging, State Fair Board and the Minnesota Federation of County Fairs sponsors an Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award. Each county is allowed to select two outstanding senior volunteers to represent their county at the Minnesota State Fair in August.
One man and one woman from Watonwan County are recognized as Outstanding Senior Volunteers, and for 2010, two rural Lewisville residents have been selected by the Senior Advisory Committee after being nominated. They are Gladys Lewis and Les Lewis and it just so happens they’ve been married for the past 63 years.
Gladys Lewis
Gladys Lewis devotes a large amount of volunteer time to sharing her skills as a gardener and recently retired at age 80 as a Master Gardener after acquiring the title at age 68. She has volunteered as a Master Gardener and given classes at schools, churches, and extension groups throughout the county during those 12 years. Gladys continues to be known for her marvelous floral centerpieces, altar flowers, and arrangements in her First Presbyterian Church of St. James, as well as fundraisers and other public events and places. In conjunction with the church, she is very active with the Food for All Program, Food Distribution, Meals on Wheels delivery, and in visiting with folks who are hospitalized or shut-ins in our area. Gladys loves to share her crocheting skills, baking skills, and other generous efforts in fundraising for First Presbyterian Church, District 840, Lewisville Memorial Park, Watonwan County Historical Society, and other organizations in the County.
Leslie Lewis
Les Lewis is very active in supporting a number of programs in the county. He is always available for Meals on Wheels, Food Distribution, various community fundraising programs, the First Presbyterian Church session, and Deacons. Les is the silent partner with Gladys’ floral contributions, doing the bulk of the gardening and carrying the flowers to their destination. Les and Gladys work together with one purpose: for the benefit of many of us in the county.
