MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Lutheran Choir and Chamber Choir, of Wisconsin Lutheran College, will perform a concert at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 315 9th Street S., St. James on Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m. The concert is part of the choirs’ 2011 Midwest Concert Tour.
The choirs will present a diverse, mostly a capella program of sacred and secular choral works in original languages. Works include Rene Clausen’s Laudate, Thomas Tallis’ If Ye Love Me , and Stephen Paulus’ Hymn to the Eternal Flame. Randall Thompson’s Ye Shall Have a Song, Eric Whitacre’s meditative hope, faith, life, love, and F. Melius Christiansen’s stirring arrangement of Philipp Nicolai’s beloved hymn Wake, Awake highlight twentieth-century settings by American composers.
The Chamber Choir set features songs of love and renewal, including Gerald Finzi’s joyful My Spirit Sang All Day. William Hawley’s Io son la Primavera paints a picture of spring with cascading harmonies. Z. Randall Stroope’s lush Amor de mi Alma for piano and choir, Steven Sametz’ I Have Had Singing, and the wordless Voice Dance, a celebration of the human voice by Greg Jasperse round out the set. The program concludes with favorite hymns and spirituals by the Wisconsin Lutheran Choir.
Dr. James Nowack, director of choral activities at Wisconsin Lutheran College since 1994, holds master of music degrees in piano performance and choral conducting from Kent State University and the University of Minnesota and a doctor of musical arts from the University of Iowa. In addition to teaching and directing at Wisconsin Lutheran, Nowack serves as guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator at conferences and conventions on a regional and national basis.
Under Nowack’s direction, the Wisconsin Lutheran Choir has developed a unified voice and a respected presence in the Midwest. The choir was recently featured in a one-hour Christmas special on Milwaukee Public Television (MPTV). A disciplined ensemble of dedicated young adults from across the nation, the choir is comprised of 58 full-time undergraduate students who represent a wide variety of academic majors and minors.
The concert at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the church at 507.375.3636.
