The new soccer field became a reality thanks in large part to Dick Downs (private donation) , Gary Sturm (the City), and Julio Zelaya (volunteer).

The community of St. James reached a milestone Sunday as the new soccer field behind Northside Elementary was officially opened for competition. Community leaders such as Gary Sturm, Bill Berg, Sue Harris, Michelle Mohlenbrock, and Dick Downs spoke to an anxious crowd of soccer players and supporters, all leading up to a ribbon cutting.
Sturm summed up the efforts that led to this event, saying it was a “collaboration of the community.” And that “unity is a part of community.”
The City of St. James has been working towards this day for 14 years. Sue Harris spoke about the importance of Dick Downs’ financial contributions to the field:
“The moment Dick Downs said he’d help, I knew that was a turning point.”
Downs’ support was indeed a vital part of making this day happen. On Sunday he said seeing this come together “deepened the pride I have in the community.”
St. James’ two amateur soccer teams, Laguna and the Dorados, had a message of thanks to the school, city management, Dick Downs, and all who have spoken out for soccer, fans and players.
