Nearly 75 7th and 8th graders from Butterfield-Odin and Comfrey Schools gathered at the Comfrey Community Center last Tuesday to experience what it means to show “courage.” Youth Frontiers, Inc., a Minneapolis-based non-profit group which builds positive school communities, led an all-day “Courage Retreat” aimed at helping kids understand how their actions affect their school, friends and themselves.
One of the central themes was that decisions you make every day matter. Are you going to follow the crowd or stay true to yourself? This theme was reinforced through music, games, skits, small group discussions and speakers. Ten Jr./Sr. students served as small group facilitators and also shared their experiences with courage.
The day closed with a challenge for each student to pledge to do one act of courage…would it be to stand up for others? To stop bullying? To be myself? Several students shared their commitments aloud as they dropped a pebble into a small pond…representing the ripple effect their actions will have on those around them.
