When this idea was brought up, it was viewed as just “another” added task for our management team to do. Getting everyone together and in the right mind set took a little coaxing from our plant staff. We had some changes in our plant management staff arise which threw some unwanted stress and changes into an already stressful situation for some. The teams had presentations to give every quarter and plant staff was amazed on how well they improved and how they took ownership each and every time.
On Friday, January 15, 2010, we had the final presentations. Our judges were Jim Weiss and Scott Schlichter from Hormel Corporate in Austin, Minnesota and Todd Osdoba from our St. James plant. Jim is the Industrial Engineer and Scott is a Quality Control Engineer who works closely with Tony Downs here at the St. James facility. Todd is the plant superintendent at St. James.
All of the presentations were conducted and the winners was selected. Tom Sandmeyer and Nikki Westberg were chosen as the winners of the first annual St. James Plant 2009 “Best of the Best” competition. Their “Best of the Best” project was the Parts Room Renovation. Tom is the plant maintenance manager and Nikki is the plant’s Cost Accountant.
