Bernard Albert Fred Glienke, 90, of St. James died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Society in St. James. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 10, 2017 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. James with Rev. Martin Lopahs officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church on Monday. Burial with full military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James. Bernard was born May 27, 1926 on the family farm in Antrim Township, Watonwan Couty, rural St. James, to parents Carl and Martha (Mumme) Glienke. He grew up in the South Branch area where he attended St. John's parochial school and Lewisville school. He help his dad on the farm until he was drafted in 1950. He served in the Army and was staioned at Ft. Sill, Okla., and Camp Roberts, Calif. He was honorably discharged in 1952. Upon returning from his military service, Bernie worked at ST Industries, Tony Downs, Sam's Electric, St. James Lumber and 20 years with the St. James Water Department. In 1953, Bernie married Elaine Wiederhoeft at St. John's Lutheran in South Branch. He retired from the Water Dept. in 1989. Bernie enjoyed fishing, flower gardening and bird watching. He served as Chaplain in the American Legion Post in St. James, served in various offices, usher, treasurer and elder at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in St. James.
He is survived by his sons, Jeff Glienke (Rebecca Kuebler) of St. James, and James Glienke of Faribault; grandchildren: Rachel Glienke of St. James, Briana Glienke of Ormsby, Shyanna Mosser of Mankato; great-grandchildren: Joshua, Desirae, and Azalah. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; parents, Carl and Martha; brothers, Arnold and Werner; sisters: Elfrieda Senf, Hertha Sternberg and Erna Moeller.
