Elizabeth "Liz" Morphew, 95, of St. James, died on June 9, 2017 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James.
Elizabeth "Liz" Morphew, 95, of Saint James, died on June 9, 2017 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James. Service will be held at the First Lutheran Church, St. James, on Wednesday, June 14 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Maggie Cumings and Rev. Robert Stover officiating. Burial will be at the Westbrook City Cemetery in Westbrook at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home, St. James and will continue on Wednesday from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at the church. A time of fellowship will be held at the church following the service. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home in St. James. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com. The family requests memorials to be used for a scholarship to those pursuing a degree in Education.
Elizabeth was born Nov. 3, 1921 the daughter of Robert and Helen (Mathews) Mellenthin in Marshall. She attended District 51, Englebreck Country School and graduated from Lynd High School. Liz received her Master Degree from Mankato State. She was united in marriage to Byron Morphew on April 9, 1944 in Marshall. Liz taught school in Minnesota Lake, Westbrook, Grogan, Butterfield and St. James, retiring in 1987 after teaching for 40 years. She enjoyed playing Bridge, 500, Bingo and traveling, loving her trip to the Holy Land. Liz volunteered in the community, was a member of the retired teachers organization and was a past recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award. Liz touched many lives and has made her mark on the world through all the children she nurtured through the years.
Survivors include her children, Doug (Sharon) Morphew of Lonsdale and Sharon (Leland) Olson of St. James; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Gertrude Cowling of Omaha and Loretta Tostenrud of Springfield; sister-in-law, Margaret Vosberg of Lowry. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Byron in 1962.
