Leona Anna Kuehl, 100, formerly of Ormsby, died Thursday, June 22, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo.

Leona Anna Kuehl, 100, formerly of Ormsby, died Thursday, June 22, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo. A Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Galena Township, rural Ormsby, with Rev. John Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery in rural Ormsby. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 27 at the Kramer Family Funeral Home in Trimont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Leona was born May 11, 1917 to Henry and Alma (Kuehl) Hoelmer on the family farm in Cedar Township, Martin County. Leona was baptized at home by Rev. John Porrisch on May 28, 1917 and was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Galena Township on May 17, 1931 by Rev P.J. Affeldt. Leona attended District #34 rural school in Cedar Township through eighth grade and graduated from Trimont High School in 1935. She attended Mankato Commercial College and then worked at the Farmers State Bank in Monterey. On March 23, 1940, she was united in marriage to Vernon Kuehl at Immanuel Lutheran Church. After their marriage, they farmed in Galena Township for many years and continued to live on the farm after retirement. Vernon died on July 30, 1998. Leona was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid. Leona enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and gardening. She collected recipes, household and health hints, and gardening tips. She kept journals and newspaper clippings and has spent much time in her last years reminiscing. She enjoyed hosting out of town guest at her house. She especially cherished the time spent at the cabin at Lake Ida with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Leona is survived by her children: Wayne (Elaine) Kuehl of Hutchinson, Eileen (Donald) Wilson of Kansas City, Mo., Nancy Hoppe of Fremont, Calif., Daniel (Rosemary) Kuehl of New Ulm, Thomas (Julie) Kuehl of rural Ormsby; seven grandchildren: Gary, Glen, Dawn, Michael, Joseph, Anna and Sara. Four great-grandchildren: Courtney, Kaylee, Jenna and Kole; sister-in-law, LaVon Hoelmer of Clayton, Calif.; sister-in-law, Mildred Christensen of St. James; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Leona was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Vernon; brothers: Harley (Verna) Hoelmer, Harold (Faye) Hoelmer and Lowell Hoelmer; brothers-in-law, Harvey (Martha) Kuehl and Victor Christensen; and other relatives.
