Gladys Mary “Dutchie” Sandmeyer, 88, of St. James died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Society in St. James.
Gladys Mary “Dutchie” Sandmeyer, 88, of St. James died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Society in St. James. Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, Sept. 30 at St. James Catholic Church in St. James with father Timothy Hall a celebrant. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery in St. James. Gladys was born July 18, 1929 in Butterfield, to parents, James and Dorothea (Dougherty) Curry. Gladys grew up in an orphanage in Wabasha along with her brothers and sisters. Gladys’s older sister, Lorraine, was the first to leave the orphanage and move to St. James. Dutchie and the others all eventually came to St. James. She worked at Swan’s Café and Toot’s and Harry’s Café before going to work at Scherr-Tumico where she worked until her retirement. On June 9, 1956, Gladys married Virgil Sandmeyer; the couple had two children, Gloria and Steve. Dutchie was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time at their lake cabin, fishing, visiting with friends on the phone, watching her favorite teams, the Twins and Vikings; and babysitting Bailey for Steve and Lori.
Gladys is survived by her children, Gloria and Bill Thulien of St. James; Steve and Lori Sandmeyer of St. James; grandson, Joseph Thulien of St. James; brother, Stan Curry of Mason City, Iowa; in-laws, Bob and Arlene Roeglin of St. James, LuEtta Sandmeyer of Windom, Jermaine Grove of Windom; several nieces, nephews, cousins and the dogs: Bailey, Buffy and Ally. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents, brothers, Keith Curry and Lawrence Curry; sisters: Lorraine (Art) Mulso, Evelyn (Enard) Warling, Bonnie Curry; in-laws, Jerome Sandmeyer and Jerry Grove.
